current definition a bit too limited

Merger proposal

I suggest merging Thrombolytic drug into Thrombolysis. There's an awful lot of overlap between the two articles at present. Both are quite short and both have been around since 2004. Comments? Qwfp (talk) 16:08, 22 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Principles

Formation of blood clots lies at the basis of a number of serious diseases (see below). By breaking down the clot, the disease process can be arrested, or the complications reduced. While other anticoagulants (such as heparin) prevent the "growth" of a clot, thrombolytic agents actively reduce the size of the clot.

Most thrombolytic agents work by activating the enzyme plasminogen, which clears the cross-linked fibrin mesh (the backbone of a clot). This makes the clot soluble and subject to further proteolysis by other enzymes, and restores blood flow over occluded blood vessels.

Principles of preventing blood clots from forming are handled by clinicians who assess the risk and if the risk of developing blood clots, the use of thrombolytic agents may be prevented. Oftentimes, thombolytic interventions are used with thrombosis prophylaxis.

Hm. We have a mess on our hands with the articles mentioned in the section above. The broadest article I have found is Reperfusion therapy which appropriately includes both drugs and devices, but unfortunately is solely focused on MI and strangely silent about ischemic stroke. I kind of think everything (including Embolectomy and should be merged to Reperfusion therapy first, and then if we need to splits from there, we can do that. Reperfusion therapy is a very general topic, with multiple specific modalities each of which is complex and heavily documented in MEDRS - among the most active areas of biomedical publication in the past 20 years (with 4960 review articles in just the past 10 years!). I would suggest retaining Thrombolysis or Thrombolytic drug (i.e. merge them as suggested) and allow it to expand, with summary coverage of thrombolysis as a specific method for achieving reperfusion. That is, unless you also think we should also merge the following into Reperfusion therapy: (i) Angioplasty, (ii) Percutaneous coronary intervention, (iii) Coronary artery bypass surgery, (iv) Pulmonary embolectomy perhaps, ...? — soupvector (talk) 04:27, 31 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
