Middle east claim?

Removed the following sentence: "In Middle Eastern countries the common cause is physical manipulation of the penis to remove an erection." Seems like a stereotype, you might as well write that Arabs "sometimes even cut off a man's penis for looking at a woman's hands". Feel free to re-add when properly sourced with reference to a knowledgeable and reliable source.

Penile fractures in Middle east

Re-added the sentence. The reference by Eke was moved to the end of this sentence. In his extensive review of the literature he compared the etiology of the injury of all reported cases. The cause of injury was usually intercourse in the western hemispherem, and more often due to physical manipulation in the Middle east. Also, I added a reference by Zargooshi from Iran, the largest reported series of penile fractures, most caused by physical manipulation, an act that has a specific name in Iran - "...The commonest cause of fracture was what the patients referred to (in Kurdish) as 'taghaandan' (meaning to click or snap)".(Derwig 15:51, 12 November 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Changing it to Iran

If that's the case then let's please change it to Iran, as this specific example cannot claim to represent an entire region. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Thisisthepope (talkcontribs) 09:08, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • See my above comment. The review by Eke indicated that the "self manipulation" etiology is common in the Middle East, not specifically Iran. The article by Zaragooshi is just one example. Derwig (talk) 10:02, 12 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Please read your sources before posting them. The Zaragooshi article is specifically about Iran while the Eke article's abstract does not refer to the Middle East at all. I am a practicing doctor IN the Middle East and have worked in Lebanon, Syria, the UAE and Saudi Arabia and I can confirm that your reading of the abstracts is uninformed and biased. In the rare cases of penile fracture the cause is usually masturbation (what you are reading as forceful manipulation of an erect penis). It is not manipulation to "remove the erection" as you state. The Gulf region has a large population of expatriate workers who are living away from their loved ones and with little access to sexual intercourse which leads to more masturbation, hence more penile fracture.--Thisisthepope (talk) 15:03, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Fracture penis is not uncommon in Qatar. In the literature, fracture penis has been reported to occur mostly during sexual intercourse(3,7). The incidence of fracture penis occurring during sexual intercourse is much less in Qatar(1). The Qatar peninsula has about 0.4 million expatriate workers, out of a total population of 0.6 million. Many of these expatriates are living in Qatar away from their spouses for prolonged periods of time. There seems to be a predilection for the fracture of the penis to occur in this group (84% in our study) of patients(1). Many of these workers are from lower socio-economic groups and live in crowded accommodation. Forceful manipulation of the erect penis seems to be the main cause of injury in this group of patients. Similar results have been reported from the Gulf region by several other studies(1, 8, 9)."[1]

Seriously, the middle east/iran thing is weird. If you were showing a world-wide variability in injury causes (assuming you could validate better than it appears you have), perhaps it would be significant, but the inclusion of one specific place is arbitrary, and, it seems, capricious. It is certainly not encyclopedic. Mandoliniment (talk) 16:32, 12 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    • Thisisthepope, Your personal experience as a practicing doctor in the region is irrelevant. Scientific writing and an encyclopedia can not be based on your experience. See Evidence-based medicine for the difference between expert (if you consider yourself one)opinion, and a systematic review of the literature (as was performed by Eke). You have called my contribution biased and uninformed. My medical education is in a relevant field, and I have read the full text of the Eke paper. I suggest you base your contributions on full texts rather than abstracts, and not use your personal experience as reference. If you can not provide a scientifically sound argument, I intend to change Iran back to Middle East. Derwig (talk) 18:05, 12 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • Derwig, can you please explain how an erection can be maintained when someone is threatening to break your penis off? Aside from the wildly racist and ludicrous picture you paint of the Middle East, seeing as neither of our experiences are relevant (be it my field of work or your reading of the full text) then we have to base this on the sources provided. The Eke article you have 'read' begins with the results of the survey and clearly states:

In 183 publications 1331 cases were reported between January 1935 and July 2001. Most reports were from the Mediterranean region. The commonest causes were coitus and penile manipulations, especially masturbation. [2]

The article, continues to mention the Middle East once in a section titled Aetiology:

Those from the Middle East resulted mainly from penile manipulations at masturbation, including kneading the penis to achieve detumescence.

For more resources that also conclude that penile fracture in Middle Eastern countries is commonly caused by masturbation see [3] and [4]

Your coinage of masturbation as 'physical manipulation to remove an erection' is either an attempt at racial slander or simply representative of your poor experiences with the act. Either way, I agree with Mandoliniment and find the inclusion of this particular note both arbitrary and capricious. I move to remove this note all together. From what I heard, a fractured penis looks very bruised, swollen and well, kind of bent sometimes. You would also have to find someone willing to provide a photo of their injured manhood. Also, this condition sounds EXTREMELY unpleasant. I hope I never have to experience something as remotely painfull as this. 95.109.102.252 (talk) 17:09, 17 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"extremely rare"

I deleted the words "extremely rare" from the lede as the Los Angeles Times article in reference #2 says it happens "more often than you think" Jim Heaphy (talk) 06:56, 28 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
