I added Solodyn to the list of trade names, but I am not 100% exactly sure if it is a minocycline itself or not... I don't have any expertise in the field. Aaronw 02:52, 18 October 2006 (UTC) (forgot to sign the first time)[reply]

Good stuff, Aaronw and Wolfkeeper. I'm not too sure about all the trade names because some were never used in the UK.

I see someone wants to tidy this article up. OK, but, as far as I can see, the information is more or less right. It's pretty much a question of moving the references down to the bottom and changing the order a bit.

I take Minocycline as a treatment for acne, and the side of the bottle contains the warning, "prolonged or excessive exposure to direct and/or artificial sunlight *SHOULD BE AVOIDED* while taking this medication." Perhaps an explanation of this should be added.

Minocycline and autoimmune hepatitis

My 16 year old twin daughters have developed autoimmune hepatitis as a result of taking minocycline for adolescent acne. Minocycline and Rheumatoid Arthritis

My fifteen-year-old daughter just developed rheumatoid arthritis. She had been taking Minocycline for acne (irregularly- she's not good about taking pills) for several months. This is the only source I have found that states Minocycline can cause RA rather than treat it. Side Effects

A full listing from the FDA about Solodyn is here. This is a time-released version of minocycline and is not completely bioequivalent, but it mentions the arthritis and autoimmune hepatitis that others said they were experiencing. Image

The image with the balls has mixed up an alcohol with a ketone on the far right of the structure. The oxygen should be illustrated as double-bonded to the carbon in the hexane ring, rather than the carbon attached to said ring with nitrogen. That latter carbon's current double-bonded oxygen should be replaced by an alcohol group. I made the image. The structure is from X-ray diffraction (Nature (2006) 443, 173-179, PDB 2DRD), but I had to put in the bond orders and hydrogen atoms myself. I used the skeletal formula from this 2008 paper to assign the bond orders. Do you have a reference that gives a different structure? If so, post a link to it here so it can be discussed.

Depersonalization

I just happened to stumble across the Wikipedia article on depersonalization today and was completely and utterly surprised to see that depersonalization is a side effect of Minocycline. I'm so glad I found this, as I've been having some really uncomfortable experiences lately, but had no idea that it was because of this medication. Incorrect citation of study article in fourth (4th) paragraph of "Anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective" section

I would like to bring attention to a discrepancy in the aforementioned paragraph. According to the abstract for citation #25, (from which, also interestingly, the 4th paragraph borrows amply from) reads that "despite a moderately high pretreatment annualized relapse rate (1.3/year pre-enrolment [sic]; 1.2/year during a three-month baseline period) prior to treatment, no relapses occurred between months 6 and 24. Also, despite very active MRI activity pretreatment (19/40 scans had gadolinium-enhancing activity during a three-month run-in), the only patient with gadolinium-enhancing lesions on MRI at 12 and 24 months was on half-dose minocycline." The second sentence from this quote (which comments on "very active MRI activity") is missing from the article's section.

I call for an amendment of this paragraph to include all pieces of information (the sentences about relapses, about MRI activity and the caveat regarding the half-dose) that are relevant to minocycline's beneficial effects in MS patients.

Adding a section on use as an antipsychotic

I don't have the vocabulary and background knowledge to write this up myself, but hopefully someone who's watching this page does: There seems to be a lot of press about the possible use of minocycline in treating negative symptoms of schizophrenia ([1] [2] and much more - a quick google search for 'minocycline schizophrenia' turns up an abundance). The coverage seems easily reliable and long-lasting enough to warrant a section in this article, I just don't feel comfortable trying to stick it in myself. ∴ ZX95 [discuss] 15:00, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Side Effect Warning

Please add a similar warning to this article, as well as any other antibiotic article that causes a similar problem. I have permanent slight-yellowing of my teeth caused by some antibiotic when I was very young. Too much time has gone by to know exactly which antibiotic caused it, but I would like to ensure it doesn't happen to other children in the future.
