Male/female?

Is there any speculation on why this condition effects predominantly middle aged females? Has it anything to do with menopause or with the length of time it can take to have immune disorders recognized or something else entirely? Irritable bowel syndrome or Microscopic colitis?

A percentage of people diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome have subsequently been found to have microscopic colitis instead.

From the 'Conclusion' of this cited article ---

"We therefore suggest that all patients previously thought to have IBS-D should undergo a total colonoscopy with multiple level biopsies from normal-appearing mucosa."

Same condition?

Apparently, some researchers have begun to consider that collagenous microscopic colitis and lymphocytic microscopic colitis may be the same disease :

"However, mixed cases exist where histological changes of collagenous colitis are observed in some colonic segments, whereas other segments show changes of lymphocytic colitis (Fiehn et al., 2021; Engel et al., 2021). Moreover, some patients will change from one subtype to the other over time (Sonnenberg and Genta, 2022). Therefore, it is uncertain whether the two histological forms are really different entities or whether they could be different stages of a single pathological process, a phase of the process, or an individual response to different triggers."
