Identifying areas of improvement

I have identified a number of aspects of improve, including:

  • Better lead section
  • Photo needed
  • Citations are needed more consistently in all sections
  • Better in-text hyperlinks for medical terms/procedures
  • More information on voice therapy
  • Consider renaming "treatment" section to "management" because there is no cure
  • Consider adding an outcomes section
  • Treatment section needs major revision of medical procedures
  • Consider adding an epidemiology section
  • Address the relationship between laryngeal papillomatosis and recurrent respiratory papillomatosis

I personally plan to address the following parts of the article:

  • Contribute to improvement of lead section
  • Add an epidemiology section
  • Edit and add to the diagnosis section as needed

Hello fellow Wikipedians! I also tried to identify additional elements to improve/modify/explore:

  • Talk about the evolution/recurrence of the condition
  • Elaborate the signs and symptoms section (Do they appear instantly after infection or do they manifest later? Are they additional/secondary symptoms? Add information about The Derkay staging system. Add information about the relationship between gastroesophageal reflus disease and recurrent respiratory papillomatosis)
  • Consider adding the following sections:
  1. Pathology (Investigate the research findings of the molecular mechanism of the disease.)
  2. Research
  3. Economical impact (The economic burden associated with the frequent surgical procedures was mentioned, it could be interesting to investigate further on the matter.)
  • Minor edits
  1. Add synonyms in the grey box.
  2. Be consistent with the terminology. For example: use the term "Vocal folds" across articles and avoid using "Vocal cords"

For now, I personally plan to address the following parts of the article:

  • Contribute to improvement of signs and symptoms section
  • Add a prognosis section
  • Search for photos that can be used on Wikipedia
  • Search for new reliable sources and citations

Don't forget to use the MEDRS sources you can find via the box at the very top of this page - it sends you to pubmed, for reviews published in the last five years. Per WP:MEDDATE we prefer recent high quality sources, so try to ditch the books from 2010 and earlier above. There is no sense in updating with outdated refs.... Suggestions for improvement

After looking over this page I have come up with some suggestions for the improvement of this article:

  • Add more to the Signs and Symptoms section (e.g. onset and progression of symptoms, elaborate on what is happening physically to produce these signs or

symptoms)

  • Move information about prevention to its own section "Prevention" rather than keeping it within "Transmission"
  • Add an Outcomes or Prognosis section
  • Add an Epidemiology section
  • Add sub-headings within the Treatment section (include Speech Therapy as its own sub-heading with more information)
  • Medical citations are needed throughout the article
  • Add a photo to the page


I personally plan on working on the following:

  • Adding to the Signs and Symptoms section
  • Adding sub-headings to Treatment section and elaborating on speech therapy
  • Separating the Prevention and Transmission (adding Prevention section)

With regards to the Treatment section, in addition to your suggestions, I think the section must be reworked to reflect current best practice recommendations, and citations must be added. In particular, I plan to add to this section by elaborating on the surgical removal of the papillomas, as well as possible surgical complications (respiratory tract burns, laryngeal scarring, and stenosis), some information on whether adjuvant treatments would be necessary, and when. I also agree that an epidemiology section should be included, covering information such as distribution (by age and by gender) and incidence. I will take on the responsibility of adding an epidemiology section.

Lead Working Draft

Laryngeal papillomatosis, also known as recurrent respiratory papillomatosis, is a rare medical condition caused by a human papillomavirus (HPV) infection of the throat. Laryngeal papillomatosis is caused by HPV types 6 and 11, in which benign tumors or papillomas form on the larynx or other areas of the respiratory tract. If left untreated, these tumors/papillomas can obstruct the airway over time and be potentially fatal. Treatment for laryngeal papillomatosis currently aims to remove the papillomas and limit their recurrence. However, due to the recurrent nature of the virus, repeated treatments usually are needed. Laryngeal papillomatosis is currently primarily treated surgically, though supplemental nonsurgical and/or medical treatments may be considered for some patients. The course of laryngeal papillomatosis is highly variable; while some patients do experience recovery, the condition is usually persistent.

Old refs

There are refs here that fail WP:MEDDATE. While you all are updating this, would you please get rid of those and update the content they are supporting based on recent refs? It was hard

I was diagnosed by a great dr at children’s in Seattle after being transported when my dr told mom I was faking it in 1977. Had 41 surgeries over 10 years. Please msg me if you need help! I went from talking hoarse to being in a bubble until Seattle diagnosed me. Have proof of all of this. Let me know if you have questions. It is still rare but I am now 46 with no issues other than a voice that my coworkers say I need a cough drop for. People in school called me Kermit the frog. Hard yea, but I am alive thankful to children’s in Seattle and dr Chan- no one knew what this was 40 years ago Michellepoundstone (talk) 04:03, 3 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
