Wikiproject:Medicine Fall 2019

Hello fellow Wikipedians, I am a current fourth year medical student enrolled in a Wiki Education Course. It is a course dedicated to enhancing and improving medical pages on Wikipedia. I will be improving upon this article over the next 4 weeks and continue to as time allows. I believe this page is of vital importance to the field of medicine and to the encyclopedia of knowledge on Wikipedia. Our aim is to improve upon the level of detail provided on this page by using high-quality resources from medical databases. Please see my specific plan below with anticipated sources. I welcome any feedback!

Lead: Investigate the current sources for validity. Validate that the statements apply generally to kidney cancer, and not specifically renal cell carcinoma.

Classification: I will add this subsection after the lead section, to follow the suggestion in content layout provided by WikiProject: Medicine. This will include the information included under the subheader “Diagnoses—types and stages”. I will expand upon this section and give a description in words for the stages of kidney cancer.

Signs and Symptoms: I will expand this information, and improve upon the citation source strength (currently one is from the New York Daily News).

Diagnosis: - add subheadings of Differential Diagnosis and Work-up. Will discuss radiographic and laboratory studies used in diagnosis.

Treatment: The focus will be on nonsurgical versus surgical.

I am reviewing User Tdamm1992’s edit of this article.

Overall, the user was complete in achieving the objectives set out at the beginning, including sections: lead, classification, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment. There are multiple links to valid references. Keywords are linked to pages to enable reader to explore the topic farther.

The lead is clear and summarizes the article effectively.

Signs and symptoms section was succinct and clear with explanation in layman terms.

Causes was also succinct and to the point. It highlights common risk factors.

Diagnosis- Medical imaging section was greatly improved. Explanation of Positive predictive value is done well and greatly appreciated. This is nitpicky, but you may want to clarify what GFR of <45 is equivalent to in terms of chronic kidney disease stage. Additionally, you can expand the term “IV contrast” or link it to another article for the reader to understand it better. Lab, biopsy, and staging section was very through. Treatment section greatly expands on the surgical and non-surgical options along with explanation of treatment in children. Epidemiology was summarized succinctly.

This article has been improved greatly, especially in diagnosis and treatment section. Great work!

Frequency?

It’s giving a totally pointless number of 418,000 (is that in the world, in Ireland, in China or where?)and giving no period of time - is that per week, per decade - per century or what? it would be much more logical to put 2% lifetime risk men; 1% lifetime risk women. Unless somebody gives a good defence of the existing stat I may change it. Rustygecko (talk) 15:11, 28 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
