HPMC is not a unique molecule??

If HPMC can have different degrees of substitution of the methoxy group and even different amounts of hydroxypropyl substitution then it is not a unique molecule. However, is it my understanding that CAS numbers are only assigned to unique molecules. (Even different enantiomers have different CAS numbers.) If I am correct here then the statement "The CAS registry number of hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose is 9004-65-3." is incorrect (I expect 9004-65-3 is the CAS number of merely one form of HPMC). I don't have time, but someone needs to investigate and correct this.

Chemical Abstracts has a number of rules defining what they consider unique. For polymers, they generally do not distinguish different degrees of substitution or different ratios of components. So "The registry number 9004-65-3 has been assigned to hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose." would be a better phrasing. There also may be other registry numbers where Chemical Abstracts did not/does not know that a tradenamed material is HPMC. When they learn it's identity, the alternative registry number will point to this one. ChemGardener (talk) 14:08, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
