note

Is there any data on incidence/prevalence? Have searched the internet for a solid week, and have not turned up any strong statistics. Cazle (talk) 03:12, 13 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Have a picture that patient okayed for public domain and publication but it is of post-banding ulcers. Will post, but better pics should be available? Samir धर्म 02:33, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Should we include a mention of the strong correlation between esophageal varices and alcoholism? RegBarc 05:37, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

All forms of cirrhosis will lead to varices, not just ALD. JFW | T@lk 21:35, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

varices in EMS

I am a Paramedic and I had my first experience with this last week. Pt had Chronic alcoholism and cirrhosis with Ascites and bright red emesis. All this at the age of 34 yrs old. The pt gave me her hx and as i studied the S/S i realized how the picture fit together. Almost as if it were a mathematical equation Applmedic 04:51, 22 July 2007 (UTC)applmedic[reply]

Awful isn't it. Getting younger and younger. JFW | T@lk 21:35, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Alcoholism

I agree that there should be mention of chronic alcoholism as part of the etiology since it is clinically relevant. Also, other diseases that have a strong correlation with alcoholism could be grouped together (spider nevi, etc.) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.169.188.225 (talk) 15:09, 13 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There are more causes of varices. Spider nevi deserve mention because they help distinguish variceal hemorrhage from non-variceal upper GI hemorrhage. They have certainly helped me. JFW | T@lk 21:35, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

octreotide and terlipressin

u need to mention these names in the treatment panel..as they are widely used when a patient has diagnosed bleed from varices, before endoscopic procedures. ~~najafhaider —Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.59.80.153 (talk) 12:58, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Predicting risk

doi:10.1136/gut.2007.137489 - after initial bleeding, a high MELD score, needing 4 units of blood or evidence of active bleeding on endoscopy all worsened the 6-week prognosis. JFW | T@lk 21:35, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
