Maximum Acceptable Blood Lead Level Over Time.

Since the maximum acceptable blood lead level changed over time, I started working on this time line:

Microgram per deciliter of whole blood and year it was declared safe.

60 μg/dL - 1960 to 1965 - Barbara D. Beck "Trace Substances, Volume 25" pp. 160

45 μg/dL - 197? (Assumed to exist due to statements about threshold of chelation therapy being 45 μg/dL. See Chisolm JJ Jr. The use of chelating agents in the treatment of acute and chronic lead intoxication in childhood. J Pediatr 1968:73:1-38.)

40 μg/dL - 1971 - Barbara D. Beck "Trace Substances, Volume 25" pp. 160 - "The Surgeon General of the United States (1971) recommended that the upper limit of normal blood lead concentration be lowered to 40 μg Pb DL whole blood."

40 μg/dL - 1972 - Lydia Denworth "Toxic Truth" pp 94 - "[Kenneth Bridbord] was having a hard enough time declaring 40 micrograms per deciliter to be the upper acceptable limit."

40 μg/dL - undated - "Potential Health Risks to DOD Firing-Range Personnel from Recurrent Lead ..." pp 31." "OSHA summarized ... inhibition of ALAD, inibition of ferrochelatase and anemia etc. at 40 μg/dL"

30 μg/dL - 1978 - "Potential Health Risks to DOD Firing-Range Personnel from Recurrent Lead ..." pp 31. - "OSHA concludes that in order to protect the fetus and newborn from the effects of lead on the nervous system, blood lead levels must be kept below 30 ug/100 g [30 μg/dL] ... (40 Fed. Reg 52960 [1978])."

30 μg/dL - 1981 - Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report: MMWR, Volume 30, pp 647.

10 μg/dL - 2003 - N Engl J Med. 2003;348:1515-1516, 1517-1526, 1527-1536 via http://www.medscape.org/viewarticle/452372 - "The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has established 10 µg/dL as the upper limit of acceptable lead levels"

5 μg/dL - 2012 - CDC Response to Advisory Committee on Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Recommendations in “Low Level Lead Exposure Harms Children: A Renewed Call of Primary Prevention” http://www.cdc.gov/nceh/lead/acclpp/cdc_response_lead_exposure_recs.pdf

0 μg/dL - 2003 - N Engl J Med. 2003;348:1515-1516, 1517-1526, 1527-1536 via http://www.medscape.org/viewarticle/452372
