Page needs major revision, has systematic errors

=Incorrect figure

The figure under the section 'function' has an incorrectly drawn sugar. The bond that is being cleaved in the figure is in the beta-configuration. this figure should be removed as it is misleading and perpetuates incorrect information.

α-galactosidase (EC 3.2.1.22) is a large group of enzymes from three different families (e.g. bacterial alpha-galactosidases are in Family 4, eucaryotes and some bacteria in Family 27, and bacterial plasmids and fungi make versions from family 36). UniProt lists ~80 proteins, PDB ~30. These include human, plant, fungi, protozoa, slime molds & bacteria. Commercial Products

An internet search conducted on 2013 February 5 (+ 2 store discoveries) found 10 commercially available products containing alpha-galactosidase as the primary active ingredient. They are as follows:

GlaxoSmithKline Beano 150 GalU tablet

GlaxoSmithKline Beano Meltaways 300 GalU tablet

CVS BeanAid 300 GalU capsule

Gas-X Prevention 600 GalU capsule

KAL Bean Relief 405 GalU V-tablet

ValuePricedMeds VEGAN Bean-zyme 300 GalU V-capsule

Vitacost Gas Enzyme Alpha-galactosidase 300 GalU tablet

They have different doses, different fillers (none for BeanAid), different tablet or capsule forms and ingredients. (Some people might be allergic to a filler or tablet/capsule ingredient.) There are other products with multiple types of digestive enzymes.

Since many people only know of Beano, a section should be added with this list of available products. There might be additional products that I haven't found yet.

It should be in table form, with columns for (at least) manufacturer, product name, dose, form.

I will check back in several weeks. If it hasn't been done by then, I'll do it.

I have reentered the section “Alpha-Galactosidase products for direct human consumption to reduce excessive intestinal gas”, with both a modified header section and a corrected and expanded list. Boghog is quite wrong that this is advertising. Wikipedia is abounding in lists and tables of commercial products with their features, so that users may compare products to help find one that is suitable for their intended use. The first one that comes to mind is graphic editors, an article that I used personally about a month ago to find one that might have a feature that is missing in the ones that I have. Earlier today I found “Category:List-Class articles” and browsing around was led to “List of energy drinks”, which is a little more analogous to this list of enzymes. If anything, that list is even more commercial in that it uses the advertising term “energy”, when quite clearly the correct categorization should be something like “alkaloid brain stimulants for disguising tiredness”.

If Boghog or anyone else disagrees with this argument then please request the help of a moderator before reverting.

Note that this section might be suitable for a stand-alone list article, which would be OK with me if you wish to convert it. If you do change it to a list article then be sure to put a link to it in the Beano article in addition to one here.

Note that I have used this enzyme for more than 20 years and can remember information that is missing from both this and the Beano article, but that I no longer have any printed documentation for. The most important is that in the invention of Beano, the research found the enzyme being used by hog producers.

Sources for the information in this section are google internet searches on the term

alpha galactosidase

and finding some products in stores that do not yet show up in google searches.

The first set of grouped products have the same dosage, the same capsule shape, size, color, and most importantly, the same capsule imprint code “5142”. Only the Walgreens one shows up in google searches as of late March 2013.

This article is a primarily about an enzyme. It is not about a list of commercial products. Creating a list of commercial products is advertising. The argument that Wikipedia is full of such lists and therefore hijacking this scientific article and turning it into a list of commercial products is justified is fallacious (see WP:OTHERSTUFF). To state the obvious, this article is an WP:ARTICLE, not a WP:LIST. If you insist that Wikipedia have such a list, please create a separate entry distinct from this article. Article change.

I changed the incidences of "Fabry's disease" to Fabry disease, the medical term for the condition. Nearly all of the items in the Reference section bear this out as does the Wikipedia article for the disease. A link to Fabry disease now works. Thank you, Wordreader (talk)

I was just wondering if the section on Fabry disease ought to be shortened a great deal, and linked to a main article. While a mention is clearly important, this section seems quite large. HacksawPC (talk) 19:17, 22 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

"Classification of α-galactosidases (according to CAZy)" under "See also" links to a phone company logo.

In "file history" (or actually "История файла" because it is on ru.wikipedia.org) I can see that it HAS been "Classification of α-galactosidases". No idea how to fix.--Bstard12 (talk) 19:49, 27 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Interrupted description

The sentence which purportedly describes the activity of the galactosidase and ends with a colon is immediately followed by a picture of its structure and several tables related to its genetics etc. The actual reaction only appears after all the tables. 108.29.53.242 (talk) 13:38, 23 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
