Air pollution sensorAir pollution measurement – I'm thinking this should be a much broader article that summarizes/compares all forms of air pollution measurement, including air pollution sensors (typically the modern electronic kind is what most general readers will think of, but there are also various older technologies), passive monitors (things like diffusion tubes will be familiar to many readers but have no obvious place in this article since they are "passive"), and older technologies (deposit gauges, Ringelmann charts etc). It should give a complete overview of all the ways we measure and monitor pollution gases and particulates - and "air pollution sensors" are only one such. 45154james (talk) 17:21, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Support as measurement also covers where to put sensors, lack of measurement in some countries etc Chidgk1 (talk) 11:16, 20 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

There is a lot more information that could be added to this article. In order to make it better there could be research done about where and how these air pollution sensors are being used. These sensors can provide information about where the highest air pollution is which can be helpful to know to improve those areas. Also, can find out if there is a system where all the sensors can send their information after they make the readings. The article is at the most basic point right now, and a lot more expanding can be done to make it more informative.

A lot of work needed!

Sorry to say that I see an awful lot wrong with this. First, the sections "History" and "Health" have almost nothing to do with air pollution sensors - they're very general blurbs about air pollution that belong in a more general place (like the article on Air pollution). Second, what do we mean by "air pollution sensor"? Are we drawing a distinction between actual sensors (like electronic sensors) and non-sensing air pollution measurements/monitors (like Ringelmann charts, deposit gauges, diffusion tubes). Is that a sensible distinction? If not, would it be better for this article to encompass all forms of air pollution sensing, monitoring, measuring, and detection? Finally, if it is going to be about sensors, it really needs to describe/compare all the key types - "manual", electrical, electronic, or whatever. 45154james (talk) 11:43, 23 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The "history" sections implies that air pollution sensing/monitoring evolved from mid-20th century disasters like the Great London Smog - but that's not correct. Pollution was being actively monitored in the early 20th century by people like John Switzer Owens and Napier Shaw with deposit gauges - and their pre-London-smog warnings were effectively ignored.

We've also got random news titbits like "A research group led by William Griswold at UCSD handed out portable air pollution sensors to 16 commuters, and found "urban valleys" where buildings trapped pollution. The group also found that passengers in buses have higher exposures compared to those in automobiles.[5]" True, but completely random. 45154james (talk) 10:20, 24 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Note to anyone else interested in improving this article that related articles (and bits of articles) elsewhere on Wikipedia include: Environmental monitoring, Air quality index, Particulate matter sampler, Portable emissions measurement system, Continuous emissions monitoring system. There are also relevant bits under gas chromatography, flame ionization detector, and assorted articles like that. Still, I feel an "overall overview" that relates all these things to air pollution would be handy here. 45154james (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 16:01, 21 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
