A mucolytic is a type of mucoactive agent, to control excess secretion of mucus.[1][2] There are two types; peptide and classic.[1]
Side effects vary between different mucolytics medicines, and may rarely include gastrointestinal bleeding.[1] They make mucus less thick and sticky by acting on the mucus layer lining the airways.[1][2] This makes the mucus easier to cough up.[2]
