undergoing cloudy swelling, fatty or waxy degeneration, or even necrosis (c). Should suppura-tion take place (a and h), the defect which is thereby formed inthe muscle is in healing usually filled up merely with granulationtissue, which subsequently changes into cicatricial tissue. In TUBERCULOSIS AND SYPHILIS 381 isolated cases, however, a restoration of the destroyed muscle-fibresby regeneration does seem to take place, at least partially. A special form of chronic muscular inflammation is myositis ossi-ficans, which results in new formation of bone in the muscles andtendons after the model of periosteal bone-development (pp. 358-9).It may occur spontaneously, or as the result of injuries, in isolatedmuscles (the deltoid, biceps of the arm or adductors of the thigh, the condition being then spoken of respectively as drill-hone orriders-bone), or it may affect most or even all of the muscles ofthe body in succession. Tuberculosis occurring primarily in muscle is certainly very rare. h
Text Appearing After Image:
Fig. 194.—Spindle-Celled Sarcoma of the Muscular Tissue of the Thigh.X 285. (Alum cochineal.) a, Bundles of spindle cells, in longitudinal and trans-verse section, usurping the place of the primitive muscle bundles ; h, Blood-vessels. Most frequently it spreads to the muscular tissue from the surround-ing parts, in which case it takes the form of caseous nodes, abscesses, fistulae, and so forth. Syphilis may exist in the muscles in the form either of gummataor of a more diffuse affection. In the latter case the endomysiumin the neighbourhood of the blood-vessels is found infiltrated withsmall cells, and the muscle corpuscles are also seen to be under-going proliferation. These changes either subside again or leadeventually to cicatricial thickening of the intramuscular connectivetissue and to atrophy of the muscular fibres. Of primary new-formations the sarcomata occur most frequently. 382 THE MUSCULAR SYSTEM Many of them so far copy the coarser structure of the muscle thattheir cell
