Summary

Description
English: This photograph depicts a lateral view of a woman’s torso at a time when she was 7-months into her pregnancy. Note the maculopapular eruptions on her abdomen, which were determined to be due to a secondary syphilis infection, caused by the bacterial spirochete, Treponema pallidum. A mother, who is pregnant, and infected with the T. pallidum bacterium, can transfer the infection to her unborn child, leading to a condition known as congenital syphilis.
