The FDI World Dental Federation, also known as FDI (French: Fédération dentaire internationale), is an international organization representing the dental profession. It was founded in Paris in 1900 and has grown to encompass over 200 national member associations and specialist groups across more than 150 countries.[1]

The primary mission of FDI is to promote optimal oral health as a fundamental human right and to advance the dental profession globally. FDI achieves this by developing health policies, providing continuing education programs, and advocating for dentistry on the international stage. Additionally, FDI supports member associations in promoting oral health activities worldwide.[2]

With a membership that includes over one million dentists, FDI plays a significant role in influencing dental care and oral health initiatives globally. Its efforts aim to prioritize oral health on the international health agenda.[3][4]

History and purpose

FDI was established in Paris in 1900 and is now headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, operating as a non-governmental organization. It is overseen by a General Assembly, which sets policy, and its activities are carried out by five standing committees composed of 60 volunteers from its national member associations. Each year, around 300 delegates participate in FDI's World Dental Parliament, where they discuss and shape the future of global dentistry.[3][5]

FDI Annual World Dental Congress

The FDI Annual World Dental Congress (FDI AWDC) is a global event organized by the FDI World Dental Federation[6]. It provides a platform for dental professionals, researchers, and industry leaders to gather and discuss developments in oral health care and related fields. The Congress includes a scientific program covering various topics in dentistry, such as oral pathology, dental materials, implantology, and preventive dentistry. Renowned experts deliver educational sessions, keynote lectures, and research presentations during this program.[1]

The General Assembly, known as the FDI World Dental Parliament, is a significant part of the Congress where member associations and specialist groups of FDI convene to discuss matters related to the dental profession and FDI's goals.[3]

The World Oral Health Forum, held during the Congress, allows policymakers, public health experts, and stakeholders to address issues in oral health, including access to care, prevention, and health promotion.[7]

The FDI World Dental Exhibition is an important component of the Congress, showcasing the latest dental technologies, products, and services from industry players.

Additionally, the Social Programme of the Congress facilitates networking and socializing among attendees from different countries, fostering collaborations between dental organizations globally.

These elements collectively create a platform for advancing oral health care, promoting collaboration, and facilitating knowledge-sharing among dental professionals worldwide during the FDI AWDC.[8]

Year and venue

World Oral Health Day

FDI World Dental Federation organizes the annual World Oral Health Day since 2013, observed annually internationally on 20 March.[9] The day is dedicated to raising global awareness of the issues around oral health and the importance of oral hygiene so that governments, health associations and the general public can work together to achieve healthier mouths and happier lives.

Partnership and projects

FDI is a member of the World Health Profession Alliance WHPA, which also includes the International Council of Nurses (ICN), the World Medical Association (WMA), the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) and the World Confederation for Physical Therapy (WCPT).
