Summary
DescriptionWestern Zhou water vessel of Marquis Qi SM.JPG |
English: Yi of Marquis Qi.
A Yi is an ancient ritual bronze vessel from China. It is believed that it was used to hold water for washing the hands before rituals like sacrifices. This Yi has the shape of half a gourd with a handle in the shape of a dragon, and an oval base. It is supported by four legs decorated with taotie (animal mask designs). The bottom shows 22 chinese characters written in 4 lines, stating that "the Marquis of Qi cast this Yi for his wife Mengji Liangnii, the princess of the State of Guo". It is from the late Western Zhou Dynasty (-1046 to -771), and is part of the collections of the Shanghai Museum.
