Summary
DescriptionTimpani missing fundamental.png
Red: Harmonics of the perceived pitch. Dark blue: Prominent modes of vibration of a kettledrum. Dashed light blue: quieted modes of vibration.
Timpani's timbre is determined primarily by the modes of vibration of a stretched membrane and secondarily by the shape of the body. Timpani bodies are shaped such that they are pitched percussion, with the perceived pitch determined by modes being modified to either be close to theoretical harmonics of the perceived pitch or quiet.Howard, David M.
