English: These en:Stonemasonry marks were created by the Stone Masons to identify their work. This helped in payment (they were paid by the number of blocks laid) and Quality Assurance. This photograph shows three different marks, which can be seen in the Chapter House of en:Fountains Abbey. They are on the left hand wall as you walk in. A quality Stone Mason (at the time of creating en:Fountains Abbey (1200s) would be able to create around four (4)! blocks a day. They would carve the blocks during the Winter and lay them during the Summer.
