SAFAVID IRAN, 17TH CENTURY

From an illustrated history, gouache heightened with gold on paper, each miniature depicting lively hunting scenes with a heavily armed group of figures, including Shah 'Abbas, mostly mounted on horseback and armed with spears, swords, falcons, rifles or bows and arrows attacking lions, leopards and gazelles lines of text in clouds reserved against gold above and below, laid down within blue and red rules on later margins, mounted Each miniature 8 7/8 x 5¾in. (22.9 x 14.5cm.); folio 12 7/8 x 8¼in. (32.6 x 20.4cm.) (2)

The first of these miniatures shows Shah 'Abbas hunting in Radkan en route from Mashhad to Astarabad. The second shows his hunting in Karabagh.
