Erroneous ideas regarding the climate are quite as prev-alent as the delusions in reference to the soil and its naturalproducts. The bulk of outsiders still fancy that the island isenveloped in almost perpetual fogs in summer, and given overto intense cold and a succession of snow storms in winter. Itis true that it partakes of the general character of the NorthAmerican climate, and is therefore much colder than lands inthe same latitude in the Old World, but in the American senseof the term, it is by no means a cold country. Winter sets inas a rule in the beginning of December, and lasts till the middleof April. During this time a snow-mantle of greater or lessdepth usually covers the ground; but winter is the time forsocial enjoyments of all kinds, and is far from being unpleasant.Springs are late owing to the Arctic current, but when warmthcomes, vegatation is very rapid.
