The frontispiece has an engraving of Coke by John Payne (1607–1647) dated 1629, that is, when Coke was aged 77. The inscriptions on the engraving are as follows:
Around the portrait: "PRVDENS QVI PATIENS." ("THE PRUDENT ARE PATIENT.")
Above the portrait: "Anno 1629." ("The year 1629.")
Bottom right-hand corner: "I Payne fecit" ("Made by I. [Iohn = John] Payne").
